Experimental Films

in the later part of our time motion class we started working with film, and experimental narratives/meanings. first we were given 16mm film, and asked to cut/scratch color/paint do any and everything we wanted to our film. looking at experimental artists such as, Andy Warhol, Man Ray, Harry Smith, Marie Menken, and Stan Brakhage.

examining these artists, and experimenting on my own, i came up with my own experimental film, as did the other students in my class. you can watch mine here.

Afterwards, we were asked to create an experimental film using digital means, the project was very open ended, but allowed everyone to go for their own interpretations. We were also given about 4 words, which we could use as inspiration, to help us draw from creatively, and get started. My four words were (scarlet, tapping, dappled, and veined.) Using these, and ideas taken from my flip-book, i created a 2:51 experimental film entitled, 'Granatum'. Which can be viewed here.

"There is no use trying," said Alice. One can't believe impossible things." "I dare say you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
--Lewis Carroll

Flip-Book

(a photographic still from my flip book. which can be found here)

well i just realized i've forgotten to post a few things, so i'm going to do that now.
starting with the flip book i made for time-motion.

you can watch the flip book here.

i wanted to deal with a few themes in my book, femininity, and personal observation, as well as the views and observations of others. i wanted to examine the personal views i impose on myself, and how i feel that other people interpret me. dealing with a very feminine view of a woman, as a sensual and fertile entity, as opposed to a simple everyday version of what sometimes may feel more comfortable, or easy.

please let me know your thoughts.

for this summer

The Tracey Fragments

The Tracey Fragments
Copyright © 2008 THINKFilm

15-year-old Tracey Berkowitz (Best Actress Oscar-nominee Ellen Page) is riding around a pre-blizzard urban wasteland on the back of a city bus, naked except for the tattered curtain she’s wrapped in, and looking for her missing brother (whom she fears she has hypnotized). Based on screenwriter Maureen Medved’s novel of the same name, THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS uses highly inventive and dynamic Mondrian-like split screens to tell the story of exactly how she wound up there. On screen for nearly every frame of the film, Page delivers a tour-de-force performance that cements her status as one of the most exciting young actresses on screen today.

Running The Numbers Art Exhibit Is Staggering

bottles-1.jpg

I know what you’re thinking — the Geekologie writer has lost it and is posting fuzzy pictures of a scrambled skin-flick on Cinemax. Well, you’re wrong. What you’re actually seeing is a picture of two million plastic beverage bottles — the amount used in the United States every five minutes. It’s a piece in an exhibit entitled Running The Numbers, by artist Christ Jordan. That particular piece is actually 60” x 120”, and there is a partial zoom and close-up after the jump, along with two others - plastic bags and cell phones. Check them out, and definitely hit the link to his gallery for a whole bunch more. They’re definitely all worth seeing. And while you may argue with the statistics Chris used, I think we can agree that it would be fun as hell to dive into all those plastic bottles.

Kidding, these pictures are disturbing. If you need me I’ll be hiding in the closet weeping into my blanky for the rest of the day.

chromatic diet

'chromatic diet' by artist sophie calle. 1998, installation
MATERIALS: 7 digital prints, 7 menu holders, 7 menu cards, wooden board, book

reminds me of some similar work i am currently doing/documenting which can be found here.

where i am documenting most meals that i have prepared for myself. I really enjoy Calle's way of presenting the imagery, i always looked at installation art as one specific entity, but i have begun to see that it is much more vast, and open than i thought. hopefully i will start to experiment with some of my own installation ideas in the near future.
